Who takes the 2025 civics test?
Under current USCIS guidance, the 2025 civics test applies if you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. Your filing date—not your interview date—determines which civics test version applies.
Always confirm your test version and any exceptions with the official USCIS 2025 civics test guidance.
How the 2025 civics test works
The 2025 civics test is oral. A USCIS officer asks up to 20 questions from the official list of 128. You must answer at least 12 correctly. The civics portion stops once you reach 12 correct answers or after it is no longer possible to reach 12.
The questions cover American government, American history, geography, symbols, and holidays. Some answers—such as the names of elected officials—can change after elections or appointments. Review the latest USCIS test updates before your interview.

How to study all 128 questions
The larger question bank rewards a steady routine. SpeakCivics helps you divide the material into short sessions and practice the skill the real interview requires: understanding a spoken question and responding in English.
- Listen before looking at the question text.
- Answer aloud, then hear and compare an accepted answer.
- Slow down difficult words and repeat them.
- Save questions that need more practice.
- Use progress history to choose what to study next.
- Try an interview simulation when you are ready.
- Practice English reading and writing along with civics.
A weekly plan for the 128-question bank
Choose a manageable set from the official list for each session. Begin with government questions, then work through history and integrated civics. Review missed questions at the start of the next session before adding more. Keep your practice bank set to the 2025 version so you learn its wording.
Once you have covered the material, mix the topics and have a study partner ask questions without showing you the text. Speak an answer before checking the accepted options. Separately review any answers about current officials before interview day.

Studying for a citizenship interview in 2026
The name “2025 civics test” refers to the test version. Use the filing-date guidance above to choose your bank when preparing in 2026. Avoid mixing question lists just because a video or study guide has a newer year in its title.
For a manageable routine, choose five to ten questions per session rather than trying to finish all 128 at once. Read the exact prompt, speak an answer, and compare it with the official list. If the prompt asks for more than one item, practice giving the requested number. Write down questions you hesitate on and begin your next session with those.
2008 or 2025 test?
If you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, review the 2008 civics test guide instead. SpeakCivics includes both versions, so you can choose the correct test during setup and change it later if needed.
