2026 NATURALIZATION INTERVIEW GUIDE
How to prepare for the U.S. citizenship interview
Put this study routine into practice with a free 24-hour citizenship interview practice trial. No card or automatic charge.
The naturalization interview asks you to do more than memorize civics facts. You need to understand questions spoken in English, answer clearly, review the information on your Form N-400, and complete the English and civics portions that apply to you. A steady routine can make each part feel more familiar before interview day.

What happens at the citizenship interview?
A USCIS officer places you under oath and reviews your naturalization application and background. Your conversation with the officer also helps evaluate your ability to speak and understand English. Unless an exception applies, you will also complete:
- Speaking: demonstrated while answering questions about your application and eligibility.
- Reading: you must read one out of three sentences correctly.
- Writing: you must write one out of three sentences correctly.
- Civics: the officer asks questions aloud from the test version that applies to you.
Interview procedures and required documents can vary by case. Read your appointment notice carefully and review the official USCIS naturalization interview and test guidance.
1. Review your own Form N-400
The interview is personal. The officer may ask about information you supplied on Form N-400, including your addresses, travel, family, work, and answers to eligibility questions. Review a copy of your completed application so the dates, names, and events are familiar. Practice listening carefully and giving truthful, direct answers rather than memorizing a script.
2. Confirm which civics test you will take
Your Form N-400 filing date—not the date of your interview—determines the current civics test version.
3. Practice hearing and answering—not just reading
The real civics test is oral and is not multiple choice. Reading flashcards can help you learn facts, but it does not fully prepare you to recognize a question spoken at normal speed and produce the answer yourself.
- Listen to a question without looking at the words.
- Say the answer aloud in English.
- Compare your response with an accepted answer.
- Repeat difficult questions at a slower speed.
- Save missed questions and review them again the next day.
4. Prepare for the English test
Build reading, writing, listening, and speaking into the same routine. Read short civics sentences aloud, listen for key words, and write sentences from dictation. For speaking practice, ask another person—or an interview simulator—to ask questions without showing you the text.
Practice for the citizenship reading test and practice for the citizenship writing test.
5. Rehearse the complete interview
Once you know most of the material, run a realistic simulation. Begin with personal N-400 questions, continue with reading and writing practice, and finish with the civics test. Ask questions in a different order each time so you practice understanding rather than memorizing a sequence.
Review common N-400 interview topics and practice answering clearly.

Before the interview, check the official USCIS test updates for answers involving elected or appointed officials.
U.S. citizenship interview FAQs
What happens during the U.S. citizenship interview?
A USCIS officer reviews your Form N-400 and background, evaluates your ability to speak and understand English, and administers the English reading and writing tests and the civics test unless an exception applies.
Is the U.S. citizenship civics test written or oral?
The civics test is oral. A USCIS officer asks questions aloud, and you answer aloud rather than choosing from multiple-choice answers.
Do I take the 2008 or 2025 civics test?
Under current USCIS guidance, people who filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025 take the 2008 test. People who filed on or after that date take the 2025 test. Confirm your version with USCIS.
How should I practice for the U.S. citizenship interview?
Review your Form N-400, confirm your civics test version, listen to questions without reading them, answer aloud in English, practice the reading and writing vocabulary, and complete realistic interview simulations.
