U.S. citizenship test practice questions and answers

The civics portion of the naturalization interview is oral. A USCIS officer asks questions aloud, and you answer aloud. Use these examples to practice producing a short answer without relying on multiple-choice choices.

Your Form N-400 filing date determines whether you take the 2008 test or the 2025 test. Confirm current answers and accepted alternatives with official USCIS materials.

Ten free civics questions to practice aloud

These sample questions use the 2008 study material. They are a starting exercise, not a complete test or a prediction of the questions you will receive. If you are studying the 2025 version, use its official 128-question list for the exact wording and accepted answers.

Read each question, say your answer, then open the answer below it. This page does not record, listen to, or automatically grade your response.

Which citizenship test should I practice?

SpeakCivics has separate guides for the 2008 civics test and the 2025 civics test. Check the version that applies to your Form N-400 filing date before choosing a question bank. The test comparison explains the question counts and passing requirements side by side.

The full 2025 bank has 128 questions; the standard oral test asks up to 20, with 12 correct answers required. Special considerations can apply. Use the official USCIS guidance linked below to confirm your preparation.

A 15-minute spoken practice routine

Start with five minutes on a small set of questions. Cover the answers and say your response before checking it. Spend the next five minutes repeating questions you missed or understood slowly. Finish by mixing familiar and difficult questions so you practice recall without relying on their order.

Keep two short lists: questions you can answer comfortably and questions to revisit. Move a question only after you can answer it aloud without a hint. A practice score helps you choose your next session; it cannot predict your interview result.

How to practice for a spoken interview

  1. Listen to the question without reading it first.
  2. Pause and answer in English using a short accepted answer.
  3. Compare your response with the accepted wording.
  4. Repeat difficult questions slowly, then at normal speed.
  5. Return to missed questions the next day.

Practice the rest of the interview

Civics answers are only one part of preparation. Use our citizenship reading test practice, citizenship writing test practice, and N-400 interview questions guide to plan a balanced session. For questions about your application, practice accurate answers about your own information.
